Bunnet Stane

About

Many, many thousands of years of wind, rain and sun have created this spectacular, mushroom-shaped rock formation near the village of Gateside. The Bunnet Stane’s sandstone ‘bunnet’, which is about four metres across, appears to be balancing on a slim sandstone stalk and is one of several unusual – and highly-Instagrammable - rock formations on the lower slopes of West Lomond.

Just along from the Bunnet Stane is a small room carved into the hillside – The Maiden’s Bower. According to local legend, a heartbroken maiden lived here after the murder of her lover, who was from a rival family.
